No sooner does Henri sweep Nancy off her feet and convince her to become Mrs. Fiocca than the Germans invade France and she takes yet another name: a code name.As LUCIENNE CARLIER Nancy smuggles people and documents across the border. Her success and her remarkable ability to evade capture earns her the nickname THE WHITE MOUSE from the Gestapo. With a five million franc bounty on her head, Nancy is forced to escape France and leave Henri behind. When she enters training with the Special Operations Executives in Britain, her new comrades are instructed to call her HÉLÈNE. And finally, with mission in hand, Nancy is airdropped back into France as the deadly MADAM ANDRÉE, where she claims her place as one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance, armed with a ferocious wit, her signature red lipstick, and the ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied Forces. But no one can protect Nancy if the enemy finds out these four women are one and the same, and the closer to liberation France gets, the more exposed she--and the people she loves--become.Book Code Name Hélène: A Novel Review :
There's a HUGE difference between grit and glamour, and Nancy Wake (a French resistance fighter in WWII) had a little bit of both, but unfortunately, Ariel Lawhon decided to focus only on the "glamour" bit, sexualizing Wake tremendously in this historical fiction about her life. While Wake spent years assisting Jewish people across borders to escape death, on the front lines organizing weapon drops for the soldiers of the Resistance, and putting her life on the line for her follow citizens, Lawhon makes the most memorable aspects of Wake to be about her use of red lipstick, her love of carrying tiny dogs around in big purses, and her need for face cream, a mattress, and silky nightgowns while camping out with French soldiers.I did read the book through, and it held my interest, but I did a lot of cringing as I read it. This writer's style is more suited for a a torrid historical romance (fictional, please) and not a war story based on true events. Sure, there's romance in here, but the heart of the story is the horrific monstrosities of WWII, and it's almost as if the author used some of these events (in sickening, brutal detail- including the murder of a pregnant woman and her full-term unborn baby) as set dressing to show just how "sassy" Wake could be.I don't know... I'm sure many people will find this book riveting and beautiful and just be absolutely enchanted with Ariel Lawhon's characterization of Nancy Wake, but for me, I just found this book made a novelty out of some very serious stuff and the very dedicated and brave men and women battling with it for the sake of dramatic tension. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Nancy Wake and she is an amazing woman. The book was riveting and kept my attention throughout. I found flip flop between the two timelines daunting. It was confusing at best since she was referring to people in both timelines but at different stages of Nancy’s life. I almost felt that maybe I didn’t catch a name in the past when they were talked about in the future but then I realized she hadn’t met them yet. Confusing at best.
